What's the Difference Between a Workout Routine and a Program?
Understand the difference between workout routines and programs in Gympal. Learn how to use routines for individual workouts and programs to schedule and organize your training.
What Is a Routine?
A routine is a single workout session made up of specific exercises, sets, and reps.
For example, a "Push Day" routine might include bench press, shoulder press, and tricep dips.
You can use a routine on its own whenever you want to perform that workout. You can also add the same routine to a program and use it as part of a larger training plan.
What Is a Program?
A program is a structured plan that combines multiple routines into a schedule.
For example, an "Upper/Lower Split" program could alternate between an upper-body routine and a lower-body routine throughout the week.
When you follow a program, the app automatically gives you the routine assigned to that day.

How Routines and Programs Work Together
Routines are the individual workouts that make up a program. A program determines when those routines should be performed.
For example, you could create:
- An "Upper Body" routine
- A "Lower Body" routine
- An "Upper/Lower" program that schedules them throughout the week
You can also use a routine without adding it to a program if you prefer to choose your workouts yourself.
Which One Should You Use?
Use a routine when you want to create or repeat a specific workout without following a fixed schedule.
Use a program when you want a structured training plan that tells you which workout to do on each training day.
If you already know which workouts you want to perform but want the app to organize them into a schedule, create routines first and then add them to a program.
